What is Search Engine Marketing?

 

Simply put, Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is search engine optimization through paid advertising.  You pay the search engines to place you on their search engine result pages through chosen keywords.  This is referred to as Pay Per Click (PPC).  When a consumer clicks on your ad, you get charged.


While there are some advantages to this method, there are a lot of disadvantages too.  For example, when you stop paying for the PPC’s, your website will no longer show up. Or, a competitor could have someone click on your ad numerous times to eat up your marketing budget resulting in no conversions for your investment.  In addition, up to 85% of search engine users completely ignore the paid advertisements. 


Search Engine Marketing is an easy fix for a web designer that doesn’t want get involved with natural search engine optimization.  SEO takes knowledge, time, patience, and work.  It is a complex process where what works today, may not work tomorrow.  The advantage to natural (organic) search engine optimization is that your website will have rich content, be search engine and user friendly, and have a conversion rate 30% higher than PPC’s.
